Here at AfterCollege, we want to help you find your first job or internship. That’s why we’ve created Explore: a place you can go to find a stream of jobs available to you.
The appeal of Explore is that we’ve eliminated the keyword search. As a student or recent graduate, you probably don’t know exactly what you want to do, and that’s okay. We created Explore to introduce you to a variety of different career options that you might not have even heard of.
After you spend some time scrolling through the positions that are available (and doing a bit of research on these jobs), you can decide which ones you like—and which ones you don’t. You can also think about the locations where you’d be interested in living and working.
The question then becomes, “How do I get my Explore stream to show more of what I like and less of what I don’t?”
Refer to the four simple steps below to get the best Explore results on AfterCollege.
1. Happy “Awesome!” Faces Vs. Sad “Not-So-Great” Faces
Your job feed totally depends on you!
If you move your cursor to the right of any job type, title, or location, two faces will appear. One is a happy face and the other is a sad face.
Happy face = you think that job type, title, or location is “awesome!”
Sad face = you are not feeling this job type, title, or location
Tell our system what you think of each element by clicking on whichever face fits. You can do this for both the general categories at the top and for specific jobs you see in your stream below.
2. Answer “Why?”
When you click on either the happy or sad face to give feedback on a specific job, a little pop-up will appear asking you why you chose that face.
By answering this question, you’ll be helping the Explore feature learn more about you and your preferences. Telling us that you LOVE that job because it’s in San Francisco will help us add more San Francisco jobs into your stream. Telling us you did NOT want the dog-sitting job because you HATE puppies will help us to make sure no more dog jobs show up in your stream. (But come on—does anyone seriously hate puppies?!)
3. Click HAPPY First
Have a set of locations you’re really interested in working in?
Instead of clicking the sad face for ALL the other locations on your Explore board, scroll through the list and find the places you do want to work in. Then, move your mouse to the right and click the happy face next to those places. Pro tip: You may need to click on the “See more” button a few times to find the locations you want. You’ll also find it’s better to choose the state(s) you like and then narrow down to cities.
Clicking the smiling “Awesome!” face first helps our system prioritize your stream better (and faster) than going through and telling us what you don’t like.
4. Remember It’s a Stream
Explore works similarly to Twitter. The job listing is a stream and is constantly changing. The jobs you see today are going to be different from the jobs listed tomorrow.
This means you may like more listings on one day than you do another.
Interacting and revisiting Explore will help our system learn and provide you with better results.
Homework time! Head over to Explore and start telling us what you like and don’t like! Remember, clicking the smiling “Awesome!” face will first will help us get you better results faster. Then, going through and clicking the sad “dislike” face will customize it even further. Tell us why you like or dislike a certain job type, title, or location so that we can make sure to give you more of what you want and less of what you don’t want.
